ABOVE ALL

A world stage seems so big, so full of power, so above the ordinary. I think of the Olympic stage that is currently showcasing athletic wonders that leave us awestruck.

Or what about the stage of politicians from a superpower country that grasps our attention and urgently points to our future, instilling fear or making promises that cannot be kept.

Then there are the A-list celebrities that are world-wide household names who have the capacity to influence everything from what people wear to what they think.

The communication systems of our world have created platforms that elevate individuals to dizzy heights, as if they are not mere mortals.

And yet … within minutes, history has shown, everything can change. An athlete is injured, a politician steps down, a king abdicates, an idol falls, and we are reminded of the mortality of man.

During a very rainy season on the southern tip of Africa, I have spent a lot of time indoors. Without the distraction of going here, there and everywhere, I have had lengthy times of solitude and silence. I’ve had time to truly think about our world, which, quite honestly, can be very unsettling. So, I decided to set my mind on things above this world to get perspective.

This beautiful song by Michael W. Smith says it better that I can.

Above all powers, above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began

Above all kingdoms, above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There's no way to measure what You're worth

If, on this day, you find the politicians, the celebrities, your boss, your family or yourself too much to handle, may I encourage you to stop, find a few moments alone and remember that our God is above all this.

He is above all powers and above all thrones. There is not one single person, no matter how powerful they may seem, who is all powerful.

Our God is above all.  We are safe.

May we think on these things!
